Buying a New Processor?
4. AMD K6-2 AMD is Intels main rival and the K6-2 has long been their main processor (long being a relative term!). It is available in speeds from 266 to 400Mhz. It uses motherboards with a so-called Socket 7 connector - the latest motherboards are called Super7 and if you buy a K6-2, you should definitely get one of these. In performance terms, the K6-2 provides good value for money and runs most applications as fast as a Pentium II or Celeron at the same Mhz speed. However, K6-2 CPUs are lacking in the floating point department. What does this mean? It means that the processor is slower than a Celeron when it comes to 3D games, 3D application, some graphics work (certain filters in photo editing programs require a lot of floating point) and spreadsheet packages. If none of those programs are important to you, the K6-2 is a great value alternative to Intel processors. |
