ABIT VP6 Raid Motherboard
Our Verdict Abit has without any shadow of a doubt surpassed the title of being the most innovative manufacturer this side of Texas. Abit in this year of the Millennium has produced some of the finest Motherboards this sector of the industry has seen, but it doesn't stop there; reliability, performance and stability have been Abit's hallmark. Abit's spunky methods to add value can however come a cropper as we have seen in rare instances, causing incompatibility with less tolerant components not manufactured to specification and hence you may have had problems in the past. When such problems occur the first one to get it in the neck is the Motherboard manufacturer, and it is clear Abit has had a fair share of the blame in the past. This mainly comes down to the retailer/dealer who cannot recognise this fact, and passes the buck. The ABIT KT7 motherboard, has a set of features that would be the envy of any motherboard manufacturer, a completely jumperless multiplier, FSB and Voltage set-up, made possible by the innovative SOFTMENU III, support for ATA/100 coupled with RAID 0, 1 and a BIOS that is so flexible it would put your flexible friend to shame.
As for you folks that need to upgrade your weary Pentium based system, get hold of a decent Pentium III Coppermine processor, and the Abit VP6, and you are away. There is not another Motherboard on the market that can provide the feature set that the VP6 offers and clearly this is the one to beat on the Pentium III platform, you never know even as a home users the Dual Socket solution may just come in handy along with RAID 0,1 when the going gets tough and you need that extra bit of performance from your system. NOTE: You will need an operating system that supports Dual processors such as Windows 2000. This is the only Motherboard we are aware of that supports both RAID 0,1 has the ability to hang 4+4 IDE peripherals, and has Dual Sockets to boot. There is one matter that you need to consider if you are upgrading, are you going to go the Intel or AMD route? Well after having done sufficient benchmarks between the two, and taking all factors into consideration of which the most important being cost, it is clear the AMD route certainly does seem to offer more value for money. As far as Chipset's are concerned VIA currently leads the pack and surpasses all of its other competitors. The combination of VIA, ABIT and AMD is without any shadow of a doubt the way to go. Abit VP6 is clearly a Motherboard with Pizzazz and as such we have no hesitation in yet again awarding another Abit Motherboard our Excellence award. Well-done Abit.
