Sony G200 Another monitor based around the Aperture grille, the G200 is a very formidable Flat Screen monitor. Bustling with features including just about every on-screen option you could possibly want, including a couple you'll probably never use, the only downside to all this is that the actual on-screen selection mechanism is very fiddly to use. After playing about with controls for a while you can start to get the hang of it, but it is still much more awkward than necessary and no where near as easy to use as the wheel on the MAG XJ700T or the simple buttons on the Mitsubishi 710. It is a monitor that once you have set up for the first time you are likely to leave how it is and just get on with it rather than getting it perfect in every resolution. Not a monitor for anyone without any patience, but the perfectionists out there will love it! It must be said that, the control mechanism aside, the monitor is superb. It flew through our tests, only failing on ones some of the other monitors failed on. The G200 really is a joy to use, with exceptional image quality and very good support for the higher resolutions. With a 0.24mm aperture grille pitch and a viewable screen size of 16", the G200 has just about everything you could expect from a 17" monitor. The only downside to it all is the price, which is the most expensive here by some way. Its recommended price is about £35 more than its closest rival, the Mitsubishi 710, which although may not sound, is over 15% price difference. It the G200 had something a little bit extra to justify the price increase, such as a USB hub etc., it would be easy to let the G200 run away with it. However, with such intense competition being provided by the likes of Mitsubishi and MAG, the G200 puts itself a little out of the running unless you really are looking for the ultimate in picture quality. The G200 comes with a three year warranty as do the others in the test although in this case the second and third year is return to base which is a little unfortunate considering the premium the monitor retails at. The build quality of the monitor is evident though and you do feel that it will just keep on going and give many years of trouble free operation. The G200 just misses out on an award due to the fact that the other monitors are so competitively priced rather than the G200 being expensive. If you can have a shop around and get one for a little bit cheaper, I would snap one up straight away! |
